Native American History
Native American History
Native Americans were the first people to live in the Americas. They arrived thousands of years ago and built many different civilizations. Hundreds of tribes developed their own languages, cultures, and ways of life. Their history is an important part of the story of America.
Before Europeans Arrived
Native Americans lived all across North and South America. Some tribes were farmers who grew corn, beans, and squash. Others were hunters who followed buffalo across the plains. Some built great cities, like the Cahokia mound builders near modern-day St. Louis.
After European Contact
When Europeans arrived, life changed greatly for Native Americans. Diseases brought by Europeans killed millions of Native people. Many tribes were forced off their lands. Despite these hardships, Native Americans have preserved their cultures and continue to contribute to American society today.
