Petra
Petra
Petra is a city cut into tall rock walls. It is in the country of Jordan. People called the Nabataeans built it over 2,000 years ago. Petra was once a busy stop for traders. Today, it is known for its beautiful rose-colored stone.
City in the Rocks
The Nabataeans were very good at carving stone. They cut homes, tombs, and temples right into the cliffs. The most famous part is called the Treasury. It has tall columns and fancy carvings. Narrow paths through the rocks lead into the city.
Water in the Desert
Petra sits in a hot, dry desert. The Nabataeans made smart channels to catch and save rain water. This let the city grow big and strong. Traders stopped there to trade spices, silk, and gold. Later, the city was left empty for hundreds of years.
