Slavery

Slavery is when people are forced to work and are treated as property. It is one of the saddest parts of human history. Slavery has existed in many civilizations around the world. The transatlantic slave trade was one of the largest and cruelest examples of slavery ever.

Slavery Through History

Ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome all had slaves. People were enslaved through war, debt, or capture. In the 1500s, European traders began taking millions of Africans and forcing them into slavery in the Americas. Enslaved people were separated from their families and had no rights.

The Fight to End Slavery

Many brave people fought against slavery. Abolitionists worked to end this cruel practice. Harriet Tubman helped enslaved people escape through the Underground Railroad. In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution finally ended slavery in America.
