The Aztecs lived in Mexico a very long time ago. They built a great empire with big cities and tall temples. Their main city was called Tenochtitlan. It was built on an island in the middle of a lake. The Aztecs were smart farmers, traders, and warriors. They ruled for about 200 years before the Spanish came.

Tenochtitlan was one of the biggest cities in the world at that time. It sat on an island in Lake Texcoco. The Aztecs built long bridges to reach the land. They made floating gardens called chinampas to grow food. The city had canals like streets of water. Boats moved people and goods around. Tall stone pyramids stood in the middle of the city.
