The Bourbon Dynasty
The House of Bourbon was one of the most important royal families in European history. They ruled France from 1589 to 1792. The Bourbons also ruled Spain and parts of Italy. Their most famous king was Louis XIV, known as the Sun King.
The Sun King
Louis XIV became king of France when he was just four years old. He ruled for 72 years, the longest reign in European history. He built the magnificent Palace of Versailles outside Paris. France became the most powerful country in Europe during his rule.
The End of Bourbon France
Later Bourbon kings lived in luxury while ordinary people suffered. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were overthrown during the French Revolution in 1789. The Bourbon dynasty in France came to an end. However, the Bourbon family still rules Spain today.
