The British Empire

The British Empire was one of the largest empires in history. It began hundreds of years ago when Britain set up colonies in faraway lands. British ships sailed to every part of the world. The empire included parts of North America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It was said that the sun never set on the British Empire.

A Global Empire

Britain is a small country, but it had a very strong navy. Its ships sailed the oceans and claimed new lands. The British built colonies for trade and to get resources. They sent tea, spices, cotton, and gold back home. At its biggest, the empire ruled over one fourth of all the people in the world.

The End of the Empire

Being part of the British Empire was not fair to many people who lived in the colonies. Over time, these places wanted to rule themselves. Many countries, like India, gained their freedom in the 1900s. Today, the British Empire is gone. But English is still spoken in many parts of the world because of it.
