The Colonial Era

The Colonial Era started in the 1600s in North America. People from England, Spain, France, and other places sailed across the ocean. They built towns and farms on land where Native Americans already lived. England started 13 colonies along the East Coast. These colonies later became the first United States.

Life in the Colonies

Life in the colonies was hard work. Most people were farmers who grew their own food. Kids helped with chores, sewing, and taking care of animals. Homes were small and made of wood. Some colonies grew crops like tobacco, rice, and corn.

Meeting Native Americans

Native American tribes had lived on the land for thousands of years. Sometimes they helped the colonists learn how to plant food. Other times, there were fights over land. Many Native Americans got sick from new diseases. The Colonial Era changed their lives forever.
