The Colosseum

The Colosseum is a giant stone stadium in the city of Rome. It was built almost 2,000 years ago by the ancient Romans. It could hold more than 50,000 people at one time. Romans went there to watch shows, games, and fights. The Colosseum is one of the most famous buildings in the world.

Building the Colosseum

The Colosseum was built starting in the year 72 A.D. It took about ten years to finish. The Romans used stone, concrete, and sand to build it. The building had four levels and many arches. When it was new, its walls were covered in smooth white stone.

Games and Shows

The Colosseum was used for many kinds of events. Gladiators fought each other and wild animals there. Sometimes the Romans even filled the floor with water to show pretend sea battles. The shows were free for Roman citizens. People cheered from their seats for the whole day.
