The Crusader States

The Crusader States were lands ruled by European knights nearly 1,000 years ago. They were built in the Middle East after the Crusades. The knights built big castles and small kingdoms to live in. These states lasted for about 200 years before they ended.

How They Began

In the year 1099, European knights captured the city of Jerusalem. They decided to stay and rule the lands around it. Four main Crusader States were created, including the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Knights and families from Europe moved there to live. They built strong stone castles to protect themselves.

Daily Life

Life in the Crusader States mixed people from many places. Europeans lived near Arabs, Jews, and people from other faiths. They traded goods like spices, silk, and gold. The knights learned new foods and clothes from the local people. Over time, the Crusader States grew weaker and were taken back.
