The French Revolution

The French Revolution started in 1789. It was a time when the people of France wanted to change their country. They were tired of kings and queens having all the power. They wanted fair rules and a better life. This big event changed France and the world forever.

Why It Started

France had a king named Louis XVI. He lived in a huge palace called Versailles. Most people in France were very poor. They had to pay lots of taxes. They often did not have enough food to eat. The people got angry. They wanted things to be fair for everyone, not just the rich.

Storming the Bastille

On July 14, 1789, a crowd in Paris attacked a big prison called the Bastille. They wanted weapons and freedom for prisoners. This day is still a holiday in France. It is called Bastille Day. After this, the revolution grew bigger and stronger.

A New France

The people made new laws. They said all men should be free and equal. The king and queen, Marie Antoinette, were put in prison. Later, they were sadly killed. France became a republic, which means the people picked their leaders. A man named Napoleon later took charge of France.
