The Gupta Empire

The Gupta Empire ruled much of India from about 320 to 550 CE. It is often called the Golden Age of India. During this time, amazing discoveries were made in math, science, and art. The Gupta period shaped Indian culture for centuries to come.

A Time of Discovery

Gupta scholars made incredible advances in math and science. They invented the number system we use today, including the concept of zero. Astronomers figured out that the Earth is round and spins on its axis. Doctors wrote important books about medicine and surgery.
