The Haitian Revolution

The Haitian Revolution was one of the most important events in world history. It took place from 1791 to 1804 on the island of Haiti in the Caribbean. Enslaved people rose up against their French rulers and fought for their freedom. After years of fighting, they won. Haiti became the first country founded by formerly enslaved people and only the second country in the Americas to gain independence.

The Fight for Freedom

Haiti was a French colony where hundreds of thousands of African people were enslaved on sugar plantations. The work was brutal and the conditions were terrible. In 1791, the enslaved people began to fight back. A leader named Toussaint Louverture became their general. He was brilliant and brave. He organized the fighters into a real army and won many battles against the French.

A New Nation Is Born

France sent a large army to take back the island. Toussaint was captured and died in a French prison. But the fight continued under a new leader named Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The Haitian fighters defeated the French army. On January 1, 1804, Haiti declared its independence. It was a powerful moment that showed the world that all people deserve to be free.
