The History of Languages

Language is how people share their thoughts and feelings. Humans have been speaking for tens of thousands of years. Over time, languages changed and new ones were created. Today, there are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world.

How Languages Began

No one knows exactly when humans first started speaking. Scientists think language developed slowly over a very long time. As groups of people moved to new places, their languages changed. Languages that started from the same source are called a language family. English, Spanish, and Hindi are all part of one big family.

Languages Today

The most spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. English is used in many countries as a common language. Some languages have only a few speakers left and may disappear. People work hard to save these endangered languages. Learning new languages helps people understand different cultures.
