The History of Trade

Trade happens when people buy, sell, or swap goods with each other. It has been happening for thousands of years. Ancient people traded food, tools, and precious stones. Trade helped different cultures meet and share ideas with each other.

Ancient Trade Routes

Some of the first traders traveled along rivers and coastlines. The Silk Road was a famous trade route connecting China to Europe. Traders carried silk, spices, gold, and other valuable goods. Ships sailed across the Mediterranean Sea carrying olive oil, wine, and grain.

Trade in the Modern World

When Europeans explored new lands, trade grew even bigger. Ships carried goods across oceans between continents. The invention of trains and airplanes made trade faster. Today, huge container ships move products all around the world every single day.
