The Maratha Empire

The Maratha Empire was a powerful kingdom in western India. It was founded by the brave warrior Shivaji Maharaj in 1674. The Marathas challenged the mighty Mughal Empire and grew very powerful. At its peak, the Maratha Empire controlled much of India.

Shivaji the Founder

Shivaji Maharaj built a strong army and navy in western India. He captured forts in the mountainous region and fought against the Mughal Empire. He was crowned king in 1674 and treated all his people with respect. Shivaji is remembered as a great hero in India.

The Empire Grows

After Shivaji, the Maratha Empire continued to expand. At its peak, it stretched across much of India. The Marathas were skilled warriors and clever leaders. The empire eventually weakened and was defeated by the British in the early 1800s.
