The Maurya Empire
The Maurya Empire ruled most of ancient India over 2,000 years ago. It was founded by Chandragupta Maurya around 322 BCE. The empire became one of the largest in the ancient world. Its most famous ruler, Ashoka, spread peace and kindness throughout the land.
Building the Empire
Chandragupta Maurya built a powerful army and united much of India under one rule. The empire stretched from the Himalayas in the north to southern India. The capital city of Pataliputra was one of the largest cities in the world at that time. A wise advisor named Chanakya helped guide the empire.
Emperor Ashoka
Ashoka was the most famous Maurya emperor. After a bloody war, he felt great sadness and turned to peace. He followed the teachings of Buddhism and spread messages of kindness. He carved his laws on tall stone pillars placed across the empire. Ashoka is remembered as one of history's greatest rulers.
