The Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire was started by Turkish people over 700 years ago. It grew into one of the biggest empires in history. At its largest, it covered parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The empire was ruled by powerful leaders called sultans. Its capital was the city of Constantinople, which the Ottomans called Istanbul.

A Growing Empire

The Ottomans were great warriors. They took over many lands, including Greece, Egypt, and parts of eastern Europe. In 1453, they captured Constantinople and made it their capital. The empire ruled over many different peoples and religions. It was strong and rich for hundreds of years.

Life Under the Sultans

The sultan was the top leader of the empire. He lived in a grand palace called Topkapi. The Ottomans built beautiful mosques, schools, and markets. They were famous for their carpets, tiles, and tasty foods. Many people in Istanbul enjoyed coffee in public coffeehouses.
