The Reunification of Germany
After World War 2, Germany was split into two separate countries. West Germany was democratic and free. East Germany was controlled by a communist government. In 1990, the two parts joined back together as one country.
A Divided Country
After World War 2, the United States, Britain, and France controlled West Germany. The Soviet Union controlled East Germany. The city of Berlin was also split in two. In 1961, East Germany built a wall through Berlin to stop people from leaving.
Coming Back Together
In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell as East Germans demanded freedom. People from both sides celebrated together. On October 3, 1990, Germany officially became one country again. It was a joyful moment for millions of Germans and people around the world.

- The Berlin Wall stood for 28 years, from 1961 to 1989.
- October 3rd is celebrated as German Unity Day every year.
- When the wall fell, people used hammers and picks to break it apart and keep pieces as souvenirs.
