The Samurai

The samurai were a special class of warriors in old Japan. They served powerful lords called daimyos. Samurai trained hard to fight with swords, bows, and spears. They wore armor made of metal and leather plates. For many years, the samurai were the most respected people in Japan.

The Way of the Warrior

Samurai followed a code of honor called bushido. Bushido means the way of the warrior. It taught samurai to be loyal, brave, and honest. A samurai was supposed to serve his lord until death. They also believed in being kind to others and respecting their family.

Swords and Armor

The most famous samurai weapon was a curved sword called a katana. The katana was sharp and strong. Samurai carried two swords, one long and one short. They wore armor that was light but tough. A samurai's sword was said to hold his soul.

  • Some samurai were women, called onna-bugeisha.
  • Samurai learned to read, write, and do calligraphy as well as fight.
  • Many samurai also studied poetry and tea ceremonies.
