September 11, 2001, is a day that many people will never forget. Terrorists hijacked four airplanes in the United States. They crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The attacks changed America and the world in many ways.
What Happened
On the morning of September 11, terrorists took control of four passenger planes. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Both towers collapsed. A third plane hit the Pentagon building near Washington, D.C. A fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after brave passengers fought back.
After the Attacks
Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day. Americans came together to help each other during this sad time. A memorial was built where the Twin Towers once stood. The attacks led to big changes in airport security and how countries work together to stop terrorism.
