The Shang Dynasty
The Shang Dynasty
The Shang Dynasty ruled part of ancient China during the second millennium BCE. It is one of the earliest Chinese dynasties that archaeologists can clearly study. The Shang are remembered for their bronze vessels, large walled cities, and oracle bones with very early Chinese writing. Their ideas helped shape Chinese history for thousands of years.
Kings, Cities, and Bronze
The Shang kings ruled from important cities in the Yellow River valley. They had armies, workers, and craftspeople who made beautiful bronze objects. These bronze vessels were used in ceremonies and were often decorated with animal faces and patterns. Shang cities had walls, workshops, and royal tombs, showing that the dynasty was well organized and powerful.
Oracle Bones and Early Writing
One of the most famous Shang discoveries is the oracle bone. Priests or diviners wrote questions on turtle shells or animal bones, then heated them until they cracked. People studied the cracks to look for answers. Afterward, the questions were written down. These inscriptions are some of the earliest known examples of Chinese writing.
What Archaeologists Found
The site of Yinxu, near modern Anyang, has revealed royal tombs, palace foundations, and thousands of oracle bones. These discoveries helped prove that the Shang Dynasty was real history, not just legend. Archaeologists have also found tools, weapons, chariots, and artworks that show how skilled Shang craftworkers were.
