World-Changing Inventions
Bi Sheng invented movable type printing around 1040 CE, about 400 years before Gutenberg in Europe. The magnetic compass was improved for sea navigation. Gunpowder weapons like rockets and bombs were first used in warfare. Paper money became widespread for the first time in history.
Science and Engineering
Song engineers built the first known canal lock for boats. They made water-powered mechanical clocks. Su Song built a famous astronomical clock tower. Song scientists wrote important books about medicine, agriculture, and nature.
