The Song Dynasty saw the invention of movable type printing, which made books easier to produce. Gunpowder was developed for fireworks and later for weapons. The magnetic compass was improved for navigation at sea. Paper money was widely used for the first time.

Cities grew large and busy with markets and shops. People enjoyed tea, poetry, and beautiful paintings. Schools and education became more important. Trade along the Silk Road and by sea brought goods from faraway lands.
