The Spanish Armada

The Spanish Armada was a giant group of warships from Spain. In 1588, the king of Spain wanted to invade England. He sent about 130 ships across the sea. England used smaller, faster ships to fight back. A big storm also helped the English win.

Why Spain Sent the Armada

Spain and England did not get along. The king of Spain, Philip II, was angry at Queen Elizabeth I. He wanted to make England a Catholic country again. He built a huge fleet to carry soldiers across the sea. It was one of the biggest fleets ever seen at that time.

The Big Battle

English ships met the Armada in the English Channel. The English ships were smaller but quicker. They used cannons and even fire ships to scare the Spanish. A strong storm then blew the Spanish ships off course. Many ships were lost, and Spain had to go home.
