The Spartan Warriors

Sparta was a powerful city-state in ancient Greece known for its mighty warriors. Spartan boys began military training at age seven. They were trained to be the toughest soldiers in Greece. The Spartan army was feared throughout the ancient world.

Training for War

At age seven, Spartan boys left their families to live in military barracks. They trained in fighting, running, and survival skills. They were given little food and clothing to make them tough. At age 20, they became full soldiers and served in the army until age 60.

Famous Battles

The Spartans are most famous for the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. King Leonidas led 300 Spartans and other Greek soldiers against a huge Persian army. They fought bravely and held off the Persians for several days. Their sacrifice gave the rest of Greece time to prepare for battle.
