The Viking Age

The Viking Age lasted from about 793 to 1066 CE. Vikings came from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. They were skilled sailors who traveled far across the seas. Vikings were not just warriors but also traders, farmers, and explorers.

Explorers and Raiders

Vikings sailed in long, narrow boats called longships. They raided towns along the coasts of Europe. But Vikings also explored new lands. They settled in Iceland, Greenland, and even reached North America about 500 years before Columbus.

Viking Life

At home, Vikings lived on farms and raised animals. They told stories called sagas about heroes and gods like Thor and Odin. Vikings were skilled craftspeople who made jewelry, weapons, and tools. They used a writing system called runes carved into wood and stone.
