The Zulu Kingdom
The Zulu Kingdom was in southeastern Africa, in what is now South Africa. In the early 1800s, a strong leader named Shaka Zulu built a mighty army. He united many smaller groups into one powerful kingdom. The Zulu became one of the most famous warrior nations in African history.
King Shaka's Army
Shaka Zulu became king around 1816. He changed the way his warriors fought by creating new weapons and battle plans. His army was well-trained and very disciplined. Under Shaka, the Zulu Kingdom grew quickly and controlled a large area of southern Africa.
The Zulu and the British
In 1879, the British Empire went to war against the Zulu Kingdom. The Zulu warriors won a famous victory at the Battle of Isandlwana. But the British eventually defeated the Zulu with their modern weapons. The Zulu people kept their proud culture and traditions alive.
