Treaties

A treaty is a formal agreement between two or more countries. Treaties can end wars, set borders, or create trade agreements. They have been used for thousands of years. Some of the most important moments in history were marked by the signing of treaties.

Famous Treaties

The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 ended a long war in Europe and created the modern system of nations. The Treaty of Paris in 1783 ended the American Revolution. The Treaty of Versailles ended World War 1. These treaties changed the map and history of the world.

How Treaties Work

Leaders from different countries negotiate the terms of a treaty. Both sides must agree to the conditions. The treaty is then signed and becomes official. If a country breaks a treaty, other countries may take action. Treaties help create a more peaceful and orderly world.
