World War 1
World War 1
World War 1 was one of the biggest wars in history. It started in 1914 and ended in 1918. Many countries from around the world took part. People also called it the Great War because it was so large. After the war ended, countries worked hard to rebuild and help each other.
How It Started
The war began in the summer of 1914. Countries in Europe had made promises to help each other if there was trouble. When a big problem happened, these promises pulled many nations into the fight. Soon, countries from other parts of the world joined too. The two main sides were called the Allies and the Central Powers.
Life During the War
Soldiers dug long ditches in the ground called trenches. They lived and worked in these trenches for months. New machines like tanks, airplanes, and submarines were used for the first time in a big war. Back home, families sent letters and packages to the soldiers. Many women took on new jobs to help their countries.
The End of the War
The war ended on November 11, 1918. This day is now called Armistice Day or Veterans Day in some countries. Leaders from many nations met in France to sign a peace agreement. People hoped there would never be another war like it. Today, we remember the brave people who served during this time.
