Boxing Day
Boxing Day
Boxing Day is a holiday held the day after Christmas, on December 26. It is a big holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other countries. Even though its name has 'boxing' in it, the holiday is not about the sport of boxing. It is a day for rest, family, and fun.
Where the Name Came From
The name Boxing Day comes from an old tradition. Long ago in England, rich people would give gifts in boxes to their workers and helpers. The boxes held money, food, or small presents. This happened the day after Christmas. Over time, the day got the name Boxing Day and became an official holiday.
Fun Ways to Celebrate
Today, Boxing Day is famous for big sales at stores. Many people go shopping to find good deals after Christmas. It is also a big day for sports, especially soccer in England. Many soccer games are played on Boxing Day every year. Families often stay home and eat leftovers from Christmas dinner.
