Republic Day is one of India's most important holidays. It is celebrated on January 26 each year. On this day in 1950, India's constitution went into effect. The constitution is the set of rules that guides how the country is run.

India became free from British rule in 1947. But it took almost three years to write the constitution. On January 26, 1950, India became a republic, which means the people have a say in who leads them. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was one of the main people who helped write the constitution.
The Big Parade
The biggest celebration happens in New Delhi, India's capital. A grand parade goes down a long road called Rajpath. Soldiers march in colorful uniforms, and tanks and planes are on display. Each state in India shows off its culture with beautiful floats. Children also perform dances and songs during the parade.
