St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6 in many countries. It honors St. Nicholas, a kind bishop who lived long ago. He was known for giving gifts to people in need. Many believe he is the person who inspired the story of Santa Claus.
Who Was St. Nicholas
St. Nicholas was a real person who lived in the 4th century in what is now Turkey. He was a Christian bishop known for his generosity. One famous story says he secretly gave gold coins to a poor family by dropping them down a chimney. The coins landed in stockings that were hanging by the fire to dry. This may be where the tradition of Christmas stockings began.
How People Celebrate
On the night of December 5, children in many European countries leave their shoes by the door. In the morning, they find them filled with small gifts, candy, and treats. In the Netherlands, the celebration is called Sinterklaas. In Germany, children receive chocolates and fruits. St. Nicholas Day is a joyful start to the holiday season.
