Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is one of the favorite holidays in the United States. It happens on the fourth Thursday of November each year. People stop to say thank you for their family, friends, food, and home. Most families eat a big meal together. They often have turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. It is a day full of love, food, and fun.
The First Thanksgiving
The very first Thanksgiving took place in 1621. It was held in a town called Plymouth. The Pilgrims had sailed from England on a ship named the Mayflower. They met Native Americans called the Wampanoag. The Wampanoag helped the Pilgrims grow food and learn about the land. After a good harvest, they shared a feast together. The meal lasted for three days. This is why we celebrate Thanksgiving today.
How Families Celebrate
Families celebrate Thanksgiving in many fun ways. Some people cook all morning to make a big dinner. Others watch a huge parade on TV with giant balloons. Many families play football in the yard or watch it on TV. Kids often make paper turkeys and draw pictures of hands that look like birds. Before eating, some people say what they are thankful for. It is a time to share love and kindness with others.

Every year, the President of the United States 'pardons' a turkey. That means one lucky turkey gets to live on a farm instead of being eaten for dinner!
