Three Kings Day
Three Kings Day
Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6 in many countries around the world. It is also called Epiphany. The holiday remembers the three wise men who traveled far to bring gifts to the baby Jesus. In many places, it is just as exciting as Christmas.
The Story of the Three Kings
According to the Bible, three wise men saw a bright star in the sky. They followed the star to the town of Bethlehem. There they found the baby Jesus and gave him three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The wise men are often called the Three Kings or Magi. Their names are traditionally given as Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar.
How People Celebrate
In Spain and Latin America, children leave their shoes out on the night of January 5. They hope the Three Kings will fill them with gifts and candy. Many cities hold colorful parades with people dressed as the three wise men. A special cake called Rosca de Reyes is baked with a tiny figure hidden inside. Whoever finds the figure in their slice gets a special surprise.
