Vesak

Vesak is the most important holiday for Buddhists around the world. It celebrates three big events in the life of the Buddha. These are his birth, his great wisdom, and his passing. The holiday happens in May each year when the moon is full. It is a day of peace, kindness, and giving.

Who Was the Buddha?

The Buddha was a real person who lived long ago in India. His name was Siddhartha Gautama, and he was a prince. He left his palace to learn about life and find wisdom. After many years, he became known as the Buddha, which means 'the one who is awake.' His teachings became the Buddhist religion.

How People Celebrate

On Vesak, people visit Buddhist temples to pray and meditate. They light candles and colorful lanterns to stand for wisdom. Many people wear white clothes and bring flowers to the temple. They also do kind things, like giving food to the poor or setting caged birds free. Some people eat only vegetables on this day.
