Gunpowder

Gunpowder is a mix of three simple things: saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur. When it is lit with a spark, it burns very fast and makes a big puff of gas. Gunpowder was invented in China more than 1,000 years ago. It was used for fireworks and later for guns and cannons.

How It Was Discovered

Chinese scientists were trying to make a medicine to help people live longer. By mixing certain things together, they found a powder that burned in a strange way. At first, they used it to make loud noises during festivals. Soon they put it into fireworks that lit up the sky.
