The Computer

A computer is a smart machine. It can do math, play games, show movies, and help people write. Computers follow steps called programs. These programs tell the computer what to do. Today, computers are in homes, schools, cars, and even in your pocket as a phone.

How Computers Work

A computer takes in information called input. You can give it input by typing on a keyboard or tapping a screen. The computer then uses its brain, called a processor, to think about the input. It saves things in its memory. Finally, it shows you an answer called output. Output can be words, pictures, or sounds.

The History of Computers

The first computers were very big. Some filled a whole room! They were built a long time ago to help with math. Over time, people made computers smaller and faster. Now, computers can fit on your lap or in your hand. They can also talk to each other through the internet.
