The Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin
The cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from the sticky seeds inside them. Before this machine, people had to do this work by hand, which took a very long time. The cotton gin made this job much faster.
Who Invented the Cotton Gin?
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. Whitney was a young inventor from Massachusetts. He saw how hard it was for workers to separate cotton by hand. One person could only clean about one pound of cotton per day.
Whitney's machine could clean 50 pounds of cotton per day. This made cotton much cheaper to produce. Cotton became one of the most important crops in America.
How the Cotton Gin Changed the World
The cotton gin made cotton farming very profitable. Cotton was used to make clothes, sheets, and many other things. Factories in the North and in England needed lots of cotton.
However, the cotton gin also had a dark side. Because cotton was now so profitable, more people were forced into slavery to grow and pick it. This is an important part of American history to remember.
