The Flashlight

A flashlight is a small tool that makes light wherever you need it. It has a bulb, a battery, and a switch inside a tube. When you turn it on, the battery sends power to the bulb. The light shines out in a bright beam.

How the Flashlight Started

The flashlight was invented in 1899 by a man named David Misell. He worked for a company that sold batteries. Early flashlights were not very strong. The batteries ran out fast, so you could only flash the light for a short time. That is why they got the name flashlight.

Flashlights Today

Modern flashlights are much better than the old ones. Most use tiny lights called LEDs that last a long time. Some flashlights are waterproof and can go underwater. Others can be cranked by hand to work without batteries. Police officers, firefighters, and campers all depend on flashlights.
