The Internet

The internet is like a huge web that connects computers, phones, and tablets all around the world. It lets people send messages, watch videos, play games, and learn new things in just seconds. You can talk to a friend far away or look up the answer to a question very fast. The internet has changed the way people live, work, and play.

How It Started

The internet began in the 1960s as a small project in the United States. Scientists wanted a way for computers to talk to each other. The first version was called ARPANET. Over time, more computers joined in. By the 1990s, a man named Tim Berners-Lee made the World Wide Web. This made the internet easy for everyone to use.

How It Works

The internet sends tiny pieces of data through cables, phone lines, and even signals in the air. When you click on a website, your device asks a big computer called a server to send the page to you. The data travels very fast and shows up on your screen. Wi-Fi lets you use the internet without any wires.

Fun Facts

  • The first message ever sent on the internet was the word 'lo.' It was supposed to say 'login,' but the computer crashed!
  • More than five billion people use the internet every day.
  • There are underwater cables at the bottom of the ocean that carry internet data between countries.
