The Loom

A loom is used to make fabric. It holds long threads in place while other threads go over and under them. This weaving creates cloth. Looms have been used for thousands of years to make clothes, blankets, and rugs.

Old and Simple

The first looms were made thousands of years ago. They were small and made of wood. People had to move each thread by hand. Weaving on old looms took a very long time.

Power Looms

In the 1700s, a new kind of loom was invented. It was called the power loom and could weave by itself. Power looms made cloth much faster and cheaper. They helped start the Industrial Revolution and changed how clothes were made.
