The Prosthetic Limb

A prosthetic limb is a human-made arm or leg. It replaces a limb that someone has lost or was born without. Prosthetics help people walk, run, grab things, and do many other activities.

The History of Prosthetics

People have made artificial limbs for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians made wooden toes to help people walk. Pirates in stories often had wooden legs or hook hands.

Over time, prosthetics got much better. Modern prosthetics are made from strong, lightweight materials. Some even have computers and motors inside to move like a real arm or leg.

Prosthetics Today

Today's prosthetic limbs are amazing. Some artificial hands can pick up small objects like a grape. Special running legs called blades help athletes sprint at incredible speeds.

Scientists are even working on prosthetics controlled by brain signals. The person just thinks about moving their hand, and the prosthetic hand moves. 3D printers are also being used to make prosthetics that cost much less.

Fun Facts

  • The oldest known prosthetic is a wooden toe from ancient Egypt, over 3,000 years old.
  • Some prosthetic legs let athletes run faster than people with natural legs.
  • 3D printers can now make prosthetic hands for a few hundred dollars.

Did You Know?

Some new prosthetic arms can actually feel pressure and temperature, letting the user sense what they are touching.
