The Skateboard

A skateboard is a flat board with four small wheels on the bottom. You stand on it and push with your foot to ride. Skateboarders can do cool tricks like jumps, flips, and spins.

How the Skateboard Was Invented

Skateboarding started in California in the 1950s. Surfers wanted something to ride when the waves were flat. They attached roller skate wheels to wooden boards and called it sidewalk surfing.

Over the years, skateboards got much better. New wheels made of a material called urethane gave riders a smoother ride. The boards were shaped with a curved tail for doing tricks.

Skateboarding Today

Skateboarding is now popular all over the world. Skate parks have ramps, rails, and bowls for riders to practice tricks. Some famous tricks are the ollie, kickflip, and grind.

Skateboarding became an Olympic sport in 2021. Both men and women compete in street and park events. Many kids learn to skateboard as one of their first sports.
