What Do Pilots Do

Pilots fly airplanes, helicopters, and other aircraft. They take passengers on trips and deliver important cargo. Pilots must know how to read weather reports and use many instruments. Flying a plane is a big responsibility because so many people depend on the pilot.

Flying a Plane

Before every flight, pilots check the airplane carefully. They look at the weather and plan the best route. In the cockpit, they use buttons, screens, and levers to control the plane. Two pilots usually work together so one can rest while the other flies. They talk to air traffic controllers on the ground for help.

Kinds of Pilots

Airline pilots fly big passenger jets across the country and around the world. Cargo pilots deliver packages and supplies. Helicopter pilots can land in small spaces and help with rescues. Some pilots fly small planes to spray crops or fight wildfires. Military pilots fly fighter jets to protect their country.

Fun Facts

  • A pilot and co-pilot eat different meals so that if one meal is bad, at least one pilot stays healthy.
  • Commercial pilots fly about 75 hours per month on average.
  • The cockpit of a modern airplane has over 300 buttons and switches.
