Libraries

A library is a special place where books live. You can go inside and pick books to read. Most libraries let you borrow books for free. You just need a library card. Libraries also have magazines, movies, and computers. They are quiet places where people read, study, and learn new things.

What You Can Find

Libraries have shelves filled with thousands of books. You can find story books, picture books, and books about animals, space, or sports. Many libraries have a kids' area with fun seats. Some libraries also lend movies, music, and video games. You can even use free computers and Wi-Fi. Librarians work there to help you find what you need.

How Libraries Work

To borrow a book, you get a library card. You show your card when you check out a book. Then you take it home to read. You must bring it back by a certain day. This is called the due date. If you keep it too long, you may get a small fine. Libraries share books so everyone can enjoy them.

Fun Facts

  • The biggest library in the world is the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
  • Some libraries are inside buses or trucks and drive to towns that have no library.
  • The oldest library ever found is over 2,500 years old and was in an ancient city called Nineveh.
