Pictograms
A pictogram is a picture that shows a word or idea. People have used pictograms for thousands of years. They are one of the oldest ways to write. Today, we still see pictograms on signs and maps.
Old Pictograms
Long ago, people drew pictures on cave walls and rocks. These pictures helped them share stories and ideas. The ancient Egyptians used picture writing called hieroglyphs. Early Chinese writing also began with pictograms. Over time, some of these pictures turned into letters and words.
Pictograms Today
We still use pictograms every day. A picture of a fork and knife on a sign means a restaurant is nearby. A walking person means it is safe to cross the street. Pictograms are helpful because people who speak different languages can understand them. Even emojis on phones are a kind of pictogram.
