The Dutch Language

Dutch is spoken by around 25 million people. It is the main language of the Netherlands. It is also spoken in the northern part of Belgium, where it is called Flemish. Dutch is related to English and German. Many Dutch words look like English words.

Dutch and English

Dutch and English come from the same old language family. That is why many words look the same. For example, 'book' is 'boek' and 'water' is 'water' in Dutch. Long ago, Dutch sailors traveled far and wide. They gave English many words like 'cookie,' 'boss,' and 'yacht.'

Where Dutch Is Spoken

Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium in Europe. It is also an official language in Suriname in South America. Some Caribbean islands speak Dutch too. In South Africa, people speak a language called Afrikaans that grew out of Dutch. Afrikaans and Dutch speakers can often understand each other.
