Coordinates

Coordinates help us find a spot on a map or a grid. They use two numbers written in parentheses, like (3, 5). The first number tells how far to go across. The second number tells how far to go up. This system makes finding places easy.

The Grid

A coordinate grid has two lines that cross. The line that goes across is called the x-axis. The line that goes up and down is called the y-axis. They meet at a spot called the origin, which is (0, 0). From there, you count squares to find any point.

Using Coordinates

To find the point (4, 2), start at 0. Move 4 steps to the right, then 2 steps up. That spot is (4, 2). Maps use coordinates to show where cities are. Video games use them to track players on the screen. Even ships and planes use coordinates to find their way.

Fun Facts

  • A French thinker named Rene Descartes invented the coordinate system.
  • GPS systems use coordinates to find your exact location on Earth.
  • The word 'Cartesian' comes from the name Descartes.

Did You Know?

Legend says Descartes came up with his idea while watching a fly crawl on the ceiling and thinking about how to describe its spot.
