Word Problems

A word problem is a math question told as a short story. Instead of just numbers, you read sentences. The story gives you clues to solve it. You have to figure out what math to use. Word problems help you use math in real life.

Reading the Problem

The first step is to read the problem carefully. Look for the numbers in the story. Then find what the question is asking. Words like 'in all' often mean you should add. Words like 'left' often mean you should subtract.

Solving It

Once you know the question, pick the math you need. You might add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Draw a picture if it helps you see the problem. Then do the math and write your answer. Always check that your answer makes sense.
