Johnny Appleseed is an American folk hero who was a real person. His real name was John Chapman. He walked barefoot across the frontier planting apple trees for over 40 years. He became a legend because of his kindness to people and animals.

John Chapman was born in Massachusetts in 1774. He traveled west into Ohio and Indiana. He planted apple nurseries ahead of the settlers who were moving west. When families arrived, apple trees were already growing for them. He was always kind and gentle to everyone he met.

Over time, people told bigger stories about Johnny Appleseed. They said he wore a cooking pot as a hat and walked barefoot in the snow. He was said to be friends with wolves and bears. While some details were exaggerated, he really was an amazing and generous person.
